How to Use OBS for My Stream Source: Set up a Live Camera Feed or Stream a File with OBS
Updated over a week ago

CORE LIVE can stream from a variety of resources that range from straight off the camera to recorded video to live desktop feeds and more. The OBS software is a tried and true streaming resource to LIVE Rooms. Best of all, the software is open source and requires no license or other fees to use.

Complete support documentation for OBS can be found at Obsproject.com.

For this article, the instructions below are limited to setting up a single OBS stream from a video. Once you understand how to stream something this simple, you can stream anything to LIVE from OBS. Check out the OBS Wiki Sources Guide for more information.

In this article:

Get Started: Download OBS Software

5th Kind makes it easy to download the appropriate OBS software. Once in a LIVE Room, do the following steps:

  1. Click the Info button in the bottom right of your screen to bring up the stream panel

  3. Download OBS for RTMP app by selecting the Mac or PC link. You'll need this version, if you plan on using RTMP feeds, i.e. a feed that comes directly of a camera. RTMP is typically used to connect with hardware.

  4. Download OBS with WebRTC app by selecting the Mac or PC link for all other feed types.

OBS Panel Overview

To stream anything via OBS you must add Sources to a Scene. You can have multiple scenes with multiple sources. This is a valuable tool, especially if you're using a single LIVE Room for different meetings or user groups and need to switch between sources on a single stream.

Whether you use OBS with RTMP or OBS with WebRTC the set up of scenes is the same.

You can setup your scenes and sources before or after you connect your stream to LIVE.

The connection to LIVE is different for WebRTC and RTMP streams.

The Panels:

  1. The Scenes panel. There must always be at least one scene.

  2. The Sources panel. This is empty, indicated that the scene “default” has no sources.

  3. Controls panel with the Streaming and Settings buttons, which connect the streamed content to LIVE.

4. You’ll need to name the source under “Create new.”

After naming it, you can navigate to wherever your local file exists. In this demonstration, we’ve chose an animation of a neon silhouette. We have some options as well. We’ve set the animation to loop so that it never stops playing.

The video is now in loop continuously in OBS. It can be resized with the view port window by clicking the red anchor points. If we wanted to, we could add additional sources to the same scene.

Stream a Live Camera Feed

Setting up a live video stream follows the same steps as setting up a stream and source for the mp4 video. The only difference is make sure to choose “Video Capture Device”. After that, name the connected camera (in this case, a USB 2.0 camera) and you’ll see live feed just as if it was conference call.
